Wildwood Jacket Kit

There is nothing quite like slipping on a quilted coat that feels as good as it looks. The Wildwood Jacket is that perfect balance of style and practicality. It is easy to throw over a chunky knit on a frosty morning or to layer on top of an outfit when you want instant cosiness. The neat shoulders give shape while the relaxed fit through the body makes it comfortable to wear.

To pair with the Wildwood, we have chosen the Jordan Quilted fabric from designer Mind the MAKER, a luxuriously soft fabric with a velvety hand feel and neat pre-quilted vertical lines. Available in a palette of beautifully saturated colours, it has a matte, water-repellent surface for extra practicality.

To add even more cosiness, and to give a nod to high street outerwear, we have also included a gorgeously soft teddy fleece for colour blocking. This is a special g&g addition, and in her Top Tips video Lauren shows you exactly how to adjust the pattern for this detail and position the teddy panels so the effect is just right.

The collar and hood expansion pack is included so you can really make the design your own. A rounded collar gives a softer retro look while the classic hood offers a relaxed urban feel. When you combine these features with the option to colour block using the teddy fleece, this coat will be a totally unique and high-end addition to your me-made wardrobe.

The Wildwood jacket comes with a choice of three finished lengths. You can make the cropped length for an on-trend jacket that works perfectly with high-waisted trousers or dresses. The hip-length view is ideal as an everyday coat, while the full-length option provides maximum warmth. The dipped back hemline adds a lovely fashion detail while also giving you a little extra coverage.

Sewing the Wildwood is just as satisfying as wearing it. You’ll finish the seams with tidy bias binding so it looks beautifully professional from every angle. The clever overlapping seams create a smooth line that complements the shape, while the snap fastenings down the front give it a modern, ready-to-wear finish. And of course, the roomy patch pockets are the perfect finishing touch and just the right size for keeping your hands cosy on a chilly day.

This is the kind of coat you will be proud to say you made and one you will find yourself reaching for again and again.

Fabric

This kit is available in four saturated colours: indigo, fuchsia, khaki and sienna

The main outer fabric is the Jordan Quilt fabric from designer Mind the MAKER. This is a premium quilted fabric with a matte, water-repellent surface. Made from a cotton-blend, it has a luxuriously soft, velvety hand feel and neat vertical quilted lines.

The wadding is slightly thicker than that used in our previous Hovea jacket kits, giving extra warmth to the jacket. The reverse side of the fabric is finished with a smooth polyester lining, making it easy to slip on over jumpers and other layers.

We’ve included Mind the MAKER’s Jordan Solid fabric in this kit to use for the hood and inner yokes, and also to create perfectly matched bias binding. It has the same matte finish as the outer of the quilted fabric and a quality feel.

For the outer yokes and inner hood we’ve sourced a snuggly double faced teddy fleece fabric in ecru. This compliments the colours of the quilted fabrics and provides extra texture to the garment.

Lauren's top tips videos

Making a coat might feel like a big project, but this kit is the perfect way to build your skills and grow your confidence.

Included with the kit are Lauren's top tips videos, where she shares all the little techniques that make a big difference to the finish of this project. You’ll learn how to make and sew your own bias binding confidently, how to shape it neatly around curves and how to adjust the pattern for colour blocking with the teddy fleece. Lauren also guides you through working with quilted fabric, pattern matching your pockets and adding professional details like snap fastenings.

By the end, not only will you have a beautiful coat to wear, but you’ll also have added a whole set of new skills to your sewing toolkit — techniques you can use again and again in future projects.

The three videos have over 100 minutes of footage, sectioned out with time stamps/chapters for easy reference and navigation.

The link to the video will be contained in your order confirmation email along with the pdf files, please file this safely for future reference. The video covers the sleeved versions of the jacket with either hood or collar.

Helen’s Closet rate this pattern as intermediate. Techniques used include working with quilted fabric, applying bias binding, inserting sleeves and applying hardware.

Recommended tools and equipment

To complete this project successfully you'll need a regular sewing machine along with Lauren's essential recommended sewing tools. Fabric clips are very helpful for attaching the binding and holding the layers of fabric together.

You can see some of the tools most used by Lauren in her top tips video in the Related Products section above.

If you would like a printed copy of the instructions sent out with your kit, in addition to the PDF copy that you will receive, please see the related products below and add it to your cart as a separate product.
