Winter Sewing Patterns to Love: Team G&G’s Picks for Cosy, Wearable Makes

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing more satisfying than stitching garments you’ll reach for again and again. In this post, Team G&G and I share our top winter sewing patterns designs you can layer, style up or down, and wear all season long.

Whether you’re after a quick layering piece or a statement coat you’ve been planning for months, these pattern picks will see you through autumn and winter in handmade style.

Pro tip: choose fabrics that keep you warm without bulk, and patterns that accommodate layering over shirts or knits.

Rosie's Layering Pieces

I love sewing pieces that make winter layering effortless and versatile. My number one choice is the Ruby Vest by Syd Graham. It’s a quick, satisfying make that works beautifully over shirts or dresses and is ideal for those in-between autumn and winter days.

Another favourite is the M&M Sanda Jacket. It adds just the right amount of warmth without feeling bulky, making it a go-to piece when you want comfort and style together.

Both of these layering sewing patterns are staples in my handmade wardrobe. They slip seamlessly into everyday outfits, making winter dressing easy, stylish, and endlessly wearable.

Becca's Winter Trousers

Winter dressing isn’t all about tops! I’m a big fan of the Dawn Jeans – I’ve made countless pairs in all sorts of fabrics, and they’re always reliable for a cosy, winter-ready wardrobe. I also love sewing trousers in soft stretch velvets from Eleanor’s or classic Mitchells wools, which feel luxurious but are practical for everyday wear. These bottoms are the perfect partners to cosy knits and layered tops, making winter dressing easy and stylish.

Hannah's Picks, Dresses & Wraps

I’m all about pieces that can be styled up or down. The Kajo Batwing Wrap is a favourite of mine – it works just as well as a cosy sweater as it does a dress.

I also love a flannel shirt dress (I’ve tried both the Jenna and Lyra Kalle patterns) for effortless layering, and the Chalk and Notch Tess Dress & Top is perfect with a jumper thrown over on chillier days. These are the kinds of makes that are versatile, comfy, and easy to wear all winter long.

Lauren’s Cosy Knit Picks

When it gets chilly, I always reach for a cosy knit. The True Bias Marlo Cardigan is my favourite – it’s a classic for chunky knits or snuggly sweatshirting. This is my latest make, and it’s even featured in our new window!

I also love the Tilly and the Buttons Drew Sweater for layering over shirts, and the Birgitta Helmerson Zero Waste Jumper, which is warm, easy to wear, and perfect if you want a more sustainable option. These are the kinds of winter makes I reach for again and again.
