Lauren’s Round-Up of Coat Sewing Patterns: Tips, Linings & Handmade Wardrobe Inspiration
Thinking about sewing your own coat? In this round-up, Lauren shares her favourite coat sewing patterns, tips for linings and fabrics, and why making your own jacket is easier than you think.
After building up my handmade wardrobe for over 10 years, it took me around four years to finally build up the confidence to sew coats and jackets. Once I did, I never looked back. Making a fully lined coat is not nearly as complicated as it seems. Yes, it takes longer and there are more pattern pieces to tackle, but at the end of the day, it is still just sewing seams, just a few more of them.
Now I absolutely love sewing coats and jackets. They are such a satisfying, slower project to take on, and there is always something new to learn, whether it is working with a different fabric or trying out a more technical tailoring technique. And the best part is you get an amazing handmade coat at the end that will last for years to come.
Coats are one of the most rewarding garments to make because you will get so much wear out of them. You can throw one on almost every day with almost any outfit, which makes the effort 100 percent worth it.
In this post, I am sharing a round-up of my favourite coat sewing patterns that I have made over the years. I will walk you through the styles, linings, and little details that matter when sewing a coat. You can also catch my latest YouTube video to see them all in action, along with links and photos for each project. Even if some of the original fabrics I used are no longer available, I hope this round-up gives you plenty of inspiration and confidence to dive into your own coat-making journey.
